.history.

Maria’s family is one huge jumble of legal and illegal immigrants to the United States. She was born to Ricardo Garcia, a teacher and Isabel Salazar, who crossed the Mexican border in hopes of a better life for her family. Maria grew up happily with her parents and grandmother. Her mother let her play dress-up and her father took her out to the park to play. She watched Saturday morning cartoons and read her parents' novels.

But at the same time her life was a bit different. Her mother worked as a maid, because she was cheap to hire. Her relatives, whenever they stopped by, were a colorful bunch ranging from college graduates to farm laborers. Maria didn’t mind it though, she just learned at a young age to keep quiet about her family. She grew up with more men around the house than women. Thus she developed a bit of a tomboy persona. Since most of the time her mother wasn’t home, she grew up quickly learning how to clean and take care of other amenities around the house with her Grandmother.

She believes she’s had an ordinary life, and sometimes she wishes that weren’t so. But as she’s grown older and no time-travel, color-coded soldiers of justice, or even a letter to Hogwarts has manifested, she believes that maybe those hopes were a bit unfounded.

Maria is cheerful and extremely optimistic. A bit of a tomboy, she’s active, liking to do all sorts of physical activity, from running, swimming, and gymnastics, to being on her school's cheerleading team. She likes to think that whenever she tries to do something she does her best at it. It takes a lot to get her angry--except when it comes to her relatives and family, who are masters at pushing her buttons. Maria likes to believe in the best of people almost to a point of childishness at times. Yet for her age, she has a very mature side. She knows how to take care of herself, since most of the time her parents work late.

.appearance.

Maria has chin-length frown hair that is a bit longer to one side in the front. Her eyes are brown, and she is medium height for her age. She isn’t really much for fashion since confort is more important to her, but she does care about how she looks. She is very confident in herself and it shows; it's a cliché but she really does wear her heart on her sleeve.
